Harp Demonstration and Recital @ Bradford Playhouse

Encouraging the public to take-up new musical skills for pleasure or profession is the key element of MelaMatik.  With guitar and Irish music workshops already on the bill, attentions turn to early music, in particular the harp.  Local harpist and harp-teacher, solo and orchestral performer Tamsin Dearnley will be presenting an informal harp demonstration and recital as part of our universally diverse music and arts festival.

On Saturday the 12th of June between the hours of 5pm and 7pm in the cosy confines of the Bradford Playhouse bar, if you have ever fancied becoming more acquainted with the heavenly strains of the medieval musical baroque instrument, Bradford's Playhouse must be penned in your diary of events not to miss.

A freelance harp musician since the age of nine, performing at both concerts and weddings just two years later, Tamsin has entertained guests at some of the most prestigious venues in the North of England, including Ripley Castle, Harewood House, and Carlton Towers, and has performed at all manner of events, from themed parties and teddy bears’ picnics, to birthday celebrations, but the notably relaxed and intimate setting of the historic theatre makes it an ideal setting to be blown away by the sheer beauty of the most magestic and versatile of all instruments.

In association with Saltaire's Early Music Shop, a leading supplier of traditional baroque instruments, Tamsin will show you how simple it is to learn the basics of the harp.   Whether an absolute beginner or an accomplished musician, its magical qualities are sure to conjure up a lasting romance with this amazing multi-stringed instrument that is strongly associated with Gaelic music and culture, as well as the formality of the classical orchestra.

The two most commonly played harps are the Clarsach (Gaelic small harp, or ‘lever harp’, and the Classical (pedal) harp (right).  Tamsin learnt the former before progressing to the latter.  Each a full sized instrument in its own right, she plays both in concerts, and as a trained singer fluent in various languages including Japanese (degree level), with an endless fascination with the interaction between language and music, circus and the performance arts (having taken part in cabaret-style events at the Bradford Playhouse before), her creative compositions remain refreshingly creative and original.

Listen and watch one of Northern England's accomplished performers playing uplifting melodies on and you will be a step-further to mastering the most wonderful of traditional instruments for yourself.  Tamsin leads regular workshops throughout the district, normally in a group setting to allow beginners to experience the thrills and spills of an orchestral setting.

Informal demonstration sessions like these are an extremely enjoyable means of developing your passions for an instrument.  Everybody attending the recital, marvelling at first-hand witnessing Tamsin's fascinating repertoire of serene elegance, manipulating sounds and rhythms, will discover more about getting the chance to experience the magic for themselves, with details of tuition sessions, concerts and private group hire, available on the day.

Entry to the Bradford Playhouse bar is free, and Tamsin will be on -hand following the recital to answer any questions you might have about the instrument, about forthcoming early music concerts in the Yorkshire region, and how you can follow your dreams!!!

The Early Music Shop began life as part of Woods Music Shop in Manningham Lane. Often referred to as something of an icon in Bradford, Woods Music closed its doors for the last time in September 2007 and the Early Music Shop moved to a spacious new showroom in Salts Mill, Saltaire.

The move to Salts Mill has enabled a wider range of instruments to be displayed including harps, lutes, recorders, harpsichords, viola da gamba, crumhorns and percussion along with music furniture CDs and accessories.  The new showroom also houses Music In Print  (formerly of Woods Music) and stocks a wide range of sheet music and books – from Classical to Pop, examination to relaxation and first tutors to master classes - there is something for every taste and ability.
